Beatitudes Society Fellows and Rev Anne Howard

When I first met Anne Howard, I lived in Santa Barbara, California and attended Trinity Episcopal Church. She served as the Associate Rector and I sat in the back of the church.  I would watch the Trinity families imagining the easy Sunday mornings when I could bring my future family to church. I left Santa Barbara before meeting my wife. I miss Trinity. Sometimes, I miss those easy Sunday mornings when children magically arrived at church and happily greeted their parents.

Last week, my daughter finally met Anne Howard in Berkeley, California outside Pacific School of Religion.

As the Executive Director of The Beatitudes Society, Anne mentors emerging church leaders across the country. This role seems a natural fit. Whenever I am near Anne, I realize that I am in a constant state of emerging. She is one of the few people who can mentor me, just by staring at me a certain way. I needed my daughter to meet Anne, so that my daughter could see another example of a strong leader.

The next batch of Fellows will be changed forever by Anne’s leadership. Anne recruits talented people and nudges them to become better preachers, leaders… people. I am lucky that I meet these folks.  The Fellows challenge me to become a better version of myself.

This last gallery is a collection of portraits. Before I write more about the Fellows, I want to know more about the progress of a certain Long Island congregation. Communities will need compassionate leaders if they are to survive hurricanes and winter storms in November.

Hey Bryan, Oceanside Lutheran is doing a great job helping the surrounding community in the wake of Sandy. Check them out at OceansideLutheran.com.
I look FIERCE in the photo, but I was not feeling fierce, only freezing! Thanks so much for your support of our great young Fellows!

Thanks Anne for including the Oceanside Lutheran link. When I first read about Oceanside Lutheran, I was impressed by their mission of “intentional inclusivity,” and I hope to find more churches that have a similar approach. Perhaps a network already exists or one could be created.

You look fierce … in a good way. On the day when my daughter assisted, she could see your strength and gentleness. Emily also took three of the last four photos. She took one of you that is pretty fierce too (photo 17 of the slideshow). Do you have a favorite?

wonderful time for all of you!

      We all enjoyed ourselves.
I don’t know if you can tell from the slideshow, but Emily is behind Anne on one of the good portraits. I wanted Emily to backlight Anne. It was cold and Emily wanted out of the cold so she stood behind Anne. For a few moments, Emily was in the shot.

Emily took some good photos too, including a good portrait of Anne.
