Saturday night I photographed the 2013 Bay Area Derby Girls Roller Derby Championships. I am almost a regular.
I will probably always feel awkward referring to a grown woman as a “girl,” but derby is a place where awkwardness is normal.
I might never live up to my derby photographer name either. I may never grow into P Giddy the way that Ellen Page’s character grew into her character, but she was a real derby girl.
I am just a photographer… with A Flat Track Mind.

B E Autiful, picture story telling!
Thank you Tearrah Nova Thrasher Thank you for all your comments during the year. I have appreciated it… and congratulations!
Great pictures as usual Bryan! For the record, I’m never offended (as a grown woman) when someone refers to me as a girl. I like your words.
Karen,
Thank you. When I was in college, I started referring to female college students as women instead of girls. After a few years, it became a habit. Coming from Fresno, I think we have a different perspective. Grown women and grown men politely call each other boys and girls. Do you think it is part of the cowboy myth? (or heritage?)
