NOTE: These photos were updated on 12/12/12, primarily because of site changes that a viewer can’t see. All of these were outtakes from the wedding of Courtney Stout and Nick Maksimowicz on December 10, 2012.
Last weekend, I photographed the Carmel Valley, California wedding of Courtney Stout and Nick Maksimowicz. I also photographed their rehearsal and portrait session. One gallery is at the bottom of the post. Other photos can be found on my website.
If every wedding were like Courtney’s and Nick’s, I would shoot weddings more often. Despite the Monterey Peninsula location, the wedding was more about friendships and commitment than it was about wealth. The couple’s friends organized the wedding. I was recruited by the bride’s childhood friend.
I spent two days with the couple and their friends. After two intense days, I have new friends too. When I left, I missed Nick and Courtney and the other people who attended. Fortunately, I still have the photos and the memories.
But not all make the final cut, including those in this post.
I took about 1500 photos. While the singles in this blog post have not appeared in any of the final photo galleries, I still care about the photos. The photo above is not my favorite, but I remember the moment. The photo below was taken before I captured an excellent picture. Other photographers can probably relate. After the shoot is over, photographers miss their subjects. Often, photographers are only left with our photographs, and there is never enough space and time for our photographs to be seen.
It seems that fewer people have time to be married too. Today I was driving my children to school and I heard about a Pew Research Center report about marriage. The newly-wed rate is at historic lows in this country. First time marriages are lower. Marriage seems unpopular. Perhaps if more couples had the support of their friends, marriage would become popular again.
Being around Courtney, Nick and their friends encouraged me about the future, and reminded me why I am grateful for my wife and family.

Bryan,
Wow! The photos that you took are absolutely stunning. Every time I look at them (and I do so more than I will admit to) I just fall in love with the day over and over again.
These beautiful pictures will last more than a lifetime … and I know I will never be able to thank you enough!
For those of you looking to work with Bryan – – I could not recommend a better fit! He was kind, genuine, personal, flexible and accommodating, creative and (obviously) an amazing photographer. I should also mention he was incredibly patient with us … we're not comfortable in front of the camera at all. If you want the perfect pictures to remember whatever day / celebration you have coming up, Bryan is your go-to-guy!
Bryan – I am so glad to be able to able to call you a friend now! It's so wonderful the way life brings people together sometimes!
Thank you again for everything!
Courtney
Courtney,
It was so easy photographing you and Nick… and all of the people at the celebration. Before I met you, I heard from Lauren that you were uncomfortable in front of the camera, but I knew I would capture good photos. I told Lauren that if I could not get good photos of you, I should have my camera taken away.
I did not know that you would be so good in front of the camera. I look at the more often than I am willing to admit. There are about three of you that I love.
I also look at a few of Nick more than I would have thought. He looks way cool. I miss him. I keep trying to plan a trip to Portland to visit all my Portland friends. We must visit you while we are there. I wish we could bring the entire crew from the wedding. Such fun.
